5 Tricks to Make Competition Easier and Less Stressful

Competitions can be stressful and nerve-racking, but a few simple tricks can make preparation much easier. Over the course of my time competing with horses, I’ve developed a few habits to help streamline the process. One of the first and most important tasks is washing, which can be especially challenging if your horse has a lot of hair.
1 - Washing & Achieving the Shiny Look
My favorite method for washing is diluting the soap, sponging it on, and then brushing it in. This helps lift dirt from beneath the surface. Nothing looks better than a horse shining in the ring! There are several ways to achieve this glossy look, including nutritional feed, hot oil treatments, and coat conditioners.
2 - Tail Cleaning & Dyeing
When dyeing tails, the best trick is to use human hair box dye—it always leaves the tail looking fantastic. For grey horses, cleaning tails can be a challenge. Removing stains for the ring is tricky, but purple shampoos work wonders.
3 - Plaiting & Quick Knots
Not everyone is skilled at plaiting, but there’s an easy way to achieve the ‘stitched look’ using quick knots. These are incredibly effective, staying secure throughout the entire weekend. Plus, you can plait a horse in less than 40 minutes using them!
4 - Gear Cleaning with Leather Wipes
If you’re running late or short on time and can’t do a deep clean of your gear, leather wipes are a lifesaver. They’re perfect for quickly removing the top layer of dust from your saddle, bridle, or boots.
5 - Managing Class Clashes & Saddle Racks
When running late or dealing with class clashes, preparation is key. Setting out your gear on saddle racks can make things so much easier. When transitioning between disciplines, like dressage and show jumping, having your gear organized and near your stable saves precious time.
By incorporating these simple tricks into your routine, you can make competitions less stressful and more enjoyable for both you and your horse!
